If you are spending a holiday on Elba island, surely you will know that the excursions are authentic must-haves. Because not far away there are the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, each of which deserves a visit. One, in particular, is what we recommend: Capraia. And here’s what to see.
The most beautiful places…
- Fort of San Giorgio. We begin with one of the symbols of Capraia, invariably photographed during any excursion here. Built by the Genoese from 1540, today its remains (part of which you can see in the picture) give the island its unique appearance.
- Church of San Nicola. A visit to Capraia cannot fail to see the main place of worship in the homonymous town. The name of the church derives from the statue of St. Nicholas, which was fished out into the sea and is still visible inside. This is the best way to immerse yourself in the traditions and atmospheres of the island.
- Lighthouse of Capraia. It is located along the east coast of the island, overlooking the Corsica channel. Why get to the Capraia lighthouse? The reason is soon said: once you reach your destination, you can admire an incomparable view, which will leave you speechless.
- Stagnone della Capraia. It is the turn of a place that one would not expect to find on this island and, for this reason, even more unmissable. The stagnone della Capraia is a small lake that is located in the western part of the island and is a true paradise for birdwatchers.
- Zenobito Tower. The one of the Zenobito is one of the four coastal towers of Capraia. To see, as in the case of the lighthouse, for the view that you can admire. The hike to get there, however, can be challenging.
… and the wonderful beaches
In summer, a dip in the sea is an obligation. In other seasons, you can still admire the beautiful and romantic views. In other words, whatever the period you have chosen, the most beautiful beaches of Capraia must be included in your itinerary: we are talking about places like Cala della Mortola, Cala Rossa and Punta della Teglia.
How to move
The island of Capraia is quite small, its surface does not even reach twenty square kilometers. The best ways to move, therefore, are essentially three:
- On foot (provided, however, to be good walkers);
- By scooter (which you can embark on the ferry);
- By boat (which you can rent, or you can take part in the many boat tours that will take you around the island).
How to get
First of all, you must book a ferry to Elba island that will take you to Portoferraio. From the port of the main town of Elba, every day, there are several ferries that take visitors to Capraia island.
