Portoferraio lighthouse: a visit to one of the symbols of Elba island

Portoferraio lighthouse

In the picture you can see one of the most representative landscapes of the island. You can also see the one which, in a sense, houses first visitors who choose to get to the main town of Elba island. We are obviously talking about the famous Portoferraio lighthouse. And the view is just one of the reasons to get to one of the symbols of the island.

  1. The lighthouse. It is located right in the middle of Portoferraio, so getting there you will walk while admiring some of the most beautiful places of the island’s main town. Built by the Lorena between 1788 and 1789, its actual appearance is due to the renovation that took place in 1915: it is an austere circular section tower. From its position, it dominates the city coastline.
  2. The fort. Portoferraio lighthouse is located at Stella fort architectural complex. It is one of the most important and ancient Medici’s fortress of Portoferraio, the system of fortifications that defended the city. Stella fort is also visible in the picture: it is the structure that stands on the hilltop. The fort, built in 1548, owes its name to its most characteristic features: in fact, it is star shaped. Among the various buildings within the architectural complex, the most significant are the powder magazine, the armory, the warehouses, the housing garrisons, the chapel.
  3. The itinerary. Portoferraio lighthouse is certainly not the only lighthouse on Elba island. It could become the starting point of a very particular itinerary: there are twelve romantic beautiful and fascinating places. As only lighthouses and the views they face can be.
