Festa medievale del caracuto 2016: the ancient magic of San Piero in Campo

Caracuto is, on Elba Island, the ancient name of the holly. And, if you’re planning to spend a short winter trip on this wonderful island, there’s a Medieval festival that you should not miss: it’s the Festa medievale del caracuto, witch will take place on December 10th, 2016, in San Piero in Campo.
In early days of December, the holly (the caracuto) colours the ancient and picturesque tower of San Giovanni. And so, once you have walked under the stone arch of piazza di Chiesa (a small square), you will make a real journey back in time, which takes place along the granite-paved alleys of San Piero.
Alleys where you can listen to the songs of a minstrel, admire an archer practicing, observe the women who cook food for their families, hear the sound of swords of knights fighting in a duel.
On the day of the event, in the narrow streets of San Piero in Campo there will be minstrels, jugglers, street performers, games and shows. In addition, you can taste medieval recipes and drinks in the taverns.
How to get there
San Piero in Campo is a small hamlet of Campo nell’Elba. To get there from Portoferraio, the main port where ferries to Elba Island dock:
- Take the county road 24 towards Procchio;
- From Procchio, take the county road 25 to Campo nell’Elba;
- From Campo nell’Elba, follow the road signs to San Piero in Campo.
The journey by car takes about thirty minutes.
