The humorous Palio of the donkeys: a touch of fun in Elban spring

The reasons to visit Elba Island in the spring are many: sports, views and beaches are just some of the main ones. And you will also have the opportunity to give the holiday that extra fun touch that never hurts: the one that guarantees the 2018 edition of the humorous Palio of the donkeys, scheduled on April 7^th and 8^th 2018, outdoors, in Marina di Campo.

The palio

Saturday, April 7^th, the appointment will be in Piazza della Vittoria for the blessing of the palio and for the assignment of mounts: eight donkeys for eight districts and as many jockeys (strictly from the original district). In the evening, an aperitif all together and lots of music.

You then arrive at the highlight, or on April 8^th. The morning will be marked by two events: the parade, at 11:00, of the districts along the streets of the old town and the promenade; the opening, at 12:30, of the food and wine stands. And then, at 15:00, there will be the beginning of the real Palio, which will take place on the beach of Marina di Campo.

Campo on Elba

Marina di Campo is the capital of the scattered municipality of Campo on Elba. And, taking advantage of the humorous Palio of donkeys, do not forget that there are so many things to see in Campo nell’Elba. Just as an example, we can mention:

• Fetovaia, one of the most beautiful beaches on Elba Island;
• The church of San Mamiliano;
• The mount Capanne;
• The necropolis of Piane alla Sughera.

How to get

We advise you to stay in Portoferraio, the main port where ferries to the island dock. From here, to get to Marina di Campo you only have to:

• Take the provincial road 24 to Procchio;
• From Procchio, take the provincial road 25 to Marina di Campo.

The journey by car takes about half an hour.
