festa dell’Innamorata 2016

In the mid-Seventeenth century, an impoverished Spanish nobleman lived in a home near Innamorata beach. It was July 14th: at night, the nobleman saw Maria in search of Lorenzo. Since then, every year on that day, the Spanish nobleman lit up torches to help the woman to find the man.

This is the origin of festa dell’Innamorata (“Innamorata” means woman in love), that in 2016 will take place on July 14th.

The event

Today, it is a sort of ritual. At 9pm, after the last strike of the bell tower of the church of the Assumption, the traditional costume parade from Capoliveri arrives at the beach. Where a thousand lighted torches mark the way.

A girl and a boy, who play the protagonists of the legend, plunge into the sea and drop a white shawl, the “ciarpa”. Thus the “disfida della ciarpa” begins: four rowboats, one for each districts of Capoliveri castle (Baluardo, Fosso, Torre and Fortezza) try to take the ciarpa.

After the disfida, the festa dell’Innamorata continues with music and fireworks.

The beach and the legend

Lorenzo and Maria are the protagonist of the legend. The beach was their love nest. A love impeded by their families. One day, pirates kidnapped Lorenzo while he was waiting for Maria. When she arrived on the beach, Maria saw the pirate ship. In an attempt to save him, he jumped into the sea. The woman disappeared into the waves, leaving behind only the white shawl.

Innamorata is also one of the most romantic beaches on Elba Island. It’s a sandy beach touched by a crystal clear sea. It’s easy to reach from Capoliveri.

  • The Innamorata is just one of the beaches of Capoliveri: other wonderful places to see are Lido di Capoliveri, Felciaio and Lacona (in particular, Felciaio is one of the most beautiful beaches on Elba).
  • In addition to beaches, the other things to see in Capoliveri are Calamita mount, Focardo fortress and sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie.

How to get there

From Portoferraio, the main tourist port of Elba Island, take the county road 26 and follow the road signs to Capoliveri. The journey by car takes about thirty minutes.
