Elba Island: a boat excursion to the enchanting Blue Cave

Boat trips are one of the ways to discover the sea of ​​the beautiful island. Excursions that will take the visitor to see places such as the islands near Elba island, Costa dei Gabbiani, Costa del Sole. And it is right along Costa del Sole that the Blue Cave of Elba Island opens up.

The cave

Also called Grotta di Mare, its name, as you can easily guess, is due to the particular and evocative and unique hue of its waters: the sea inside takes a very intense blue color, almost blue. Color that is reflected on the rock walls, offering spectacular reverberations.

Not only the surface but also the backdrop of the Blue Cave should be discovered. And just arm yourself with a mask and snorkel, you do not need anything else to admire the shape of the rocks that rise underwater and the underwater life that populates the cave: who is looking for where to snorkel on Elba island, cannot miss this suggestive spot.

How to get

And to reach the Blue Cave? It is located at a short distance from the Cavoli beach (which, not surprisingly, is one of the most beautiful beaches on Elba island). Cave that can only be reached by sea, by renting a small boat or a pedal boat always on the beach of Cavoli, or taking part in a boat excursion.

Starting from Portoferraio, the main tourist port of Elba, you get to the beach of Cavoli taking:

• The provincial road 24 up to Procchio;
• From Procchio, the provincial road 25 southwards following the signs for Cavoli.

The journey by car takes about half an hour.

Some tips

Inside the Blue Cave of Elba island, the sea is almost always calm but in any case before taking a boat or a pedal boat it is better to evaluate the sea conditions. The best time to visit is definitely in the afternoon, when temperatures start to fall.

Costa del Sole

We gave you a hint at the beginning but it is worthwhile to talk about it. The Cavoli beach, in fact, is set in the so-called Costa del Sole. A very evocative name that this coast of Elba has earned for the picturesque views that is able to give to all visitors.
