In a sense, one can say that it encapsulates in itself the colors, the scents and the characteristic flavors of autumn. It is no coincidence that it’s one of the most typical fruits of this season. At Elba every year, an event is dedicated to him and this year will certainly not be an exception: on 29 October will be the 2017 edition of Castagnata, the chestnut festival of Poggio.
October 29 is Sunday. A Sunday during which the little streets and squares of Poggio will be pervaded by the scents and flavors of the Chalennas-based elbane specialties: first pies, second courses, bread, beer, liqueurs and, of course, chestnuts, boiled chestnuts. All accompanied by the red wines of the Elba island.
The Chestnut begins at 12:00 and goes on until evening. Gastronomic specialties can be found in over fifty stands set up in the streets and squares of the town. To complete the evening, there will be so much live music and outdoor dances.
On the days of the event, it will be open and you will be able to visit the Drouot lodge, a 18th-century historic building, dedicated to Count Drouot, governor of the Elba island during the exile of Napoleon.
The Western Ring
The Castagnata is one of the reasons to visit the Elba island in the autumn. And you can give an extra tip: the Western Ring. It’s the coastal road from Procchio to Marina di Campo. A road capable of giving unforgettable views of the sea, made even more special by the atmospheres, colors and scents of autumn.
How to get
From Portoferraio (the main tourist port for ferries to the Elba island) to get to Procchio (fraction of the municipality of Marciana), you only have to take the provincial road 24 west and follow the signs for Procchio. The car journey takes about 15 minutes.
