Western ring of Elba island: an 8-stage itinerary

A route suitable for all trekking or cycling lovers. It is also recommended for those who are simply taking a holiday in this destination. We are talking about the so-called western ring of Elba island. That is the coastal road that from Procchio reaches Marina di Campo.

The tour of the Western Ring

Although defining the western ring of Elba island simply as a “road” is an understatement. As it is an authentic route that will take you to see some of the most beautiful places on Elba island: the marinas, the small villages perched on the mountains, the landscapes overlooking the sea, the chestnut woods.

A path consisting of these eight stages:

1. Isolotto della Paolina. It can be found starting from Procchio in the direction of Marina di Campo. The name of the islet derives from Paolina Bonaparte who seems to particularly love this place.
2. Cabinovia del monte Capanne. You can get there from the provincial road that climbs from Marciana Marina. It could be an excellent opportunity to enjoy a pleasant excursion on Mount Capanne.
3. Marciana Marina. A small, welcoming and picturesque, typically maritime village, the road leading to Marciana Alta also starts from here.
4. Fortezza pisana. You can get there by following the specific directions from the town of Marciana Marina. From the fortress you can enjoy a splendid view with the gaze that embraces the roofs of Marciana Marina, the coast, Corsica and Capraia from above.
5. Poggio. Another small village this time nestled on the slopes of Mount Capanne, a place whose narrow alleys, parish churches and houses must be seen.
6. Chiessi. Just before entering this location, in a sharp bend that slopes down towards Chiessi, you can admire Corsica, Giglio and some of the islands near Elba such as Montecristo and Pianosa.
7. Golfo di Fetovaia. Known mainly by diving enthusiasts, it is appreciated for the view it gives.
8. Marina di Campo. Along the road that leads to the end of the western ring of Elba island, we stop for the last stop, with the cliff that jumps into the sea and the islands on the horizon.
