Rio Marina port

Second only to Portoferraio among the ports of arrival for ferries to the Island of Elba, the port of Rio Marina owes its construction to mining activities on the East of Elba; it is the ideal loading point for ships transporting materials extracted from the nearby mines in the municipalities of Rio and Rio Marina. Over the years, the wooden loading jetties have given way to iron loading jetties and a protective breakwater that has been extended on several occasions. As the mining activities dwindled and eventually came to an end, part of the port’s loading apparatus was consequently abandoned and removed; nonetheless, the offshore part of the port has been extended and reinforced over the years to accommodate the Toremar ferries serving the Piombino-Rio Marina line.
